VAPA Foundation

A nonprofit organization

$1,000 Raised by 6 Donors

The VAPA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) created in 2017 to enhance the quality of and access to arts education in the San Diego Unified School District, and we have a plentitude of programs that accomplish this mission:

  1. VAPA Enhancement Program (VEP) provides funding to teachers/classrooms for unique and deeper arts learning experiences that have included artist residencies in music, dance, and theatre, interactive field trips to arts and culture organizations, and professional development for teachers; as well as art equipment including ukeleles for elementary classrooms, laser 3-D printers and laser cutters for high school art departments. This funding is for programs and equipment which are outside of the regular SDUSD school budgets.
  2. Arts engagement for elementary/middle and high school students from across the district to audition, collaborate and perform in a professional setting.
  3. Recognition of students, teachers, and administrators with Spotlight awards for outstanding commitment to creating, teaching, and supporting arts education.
  4. Collaborations with colleges such as UC San Diego and arts and culture organizations that transform arts learning into endless possibilities for students.
  5. Target the needs on all students and close the opportunity gap for students who have the least arts education access by funding direct learning for transitional kindergarten to 12 grade students, providing professional development for the educators and artists who support them, and enabling the collective impact  of the schools and communities that serve them.

While there are numerous organizations in San Diego that provide arts education programming, it is the school district that is responsible for providing a standards-based, sequential arts education for all students and providing the resources and infrastructure that make this happen. With the creation of the VAPA Foundation, the district intends to advocate for more community resources and distribute these resources in a more strategic, coherent, and powerful way to improve the quality, equity, and access of arts education throughout the district. There is no other organization that exists that can coordinate resources at this level and scale.
